Math Options Summer Camp for girls now accepting applications

Girls entering ninth or tenth grade this fall are invited to apply to participate in a weeklong math, science and technology summer camp at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.

Math Options Summer Camp will be held on campus Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17. Girls will be introduced to current topics and laboratory techniques in the fields of psychology, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics and engineering by Penn State Behrend faculty and mentors in the science professions.

“In government and the private sector, women occupy only 23 percent of math- and science-related jobs, mostly in the fields of health and social sciences” said Barbara Hido, Math Options Summer Camp coordinator and a former middle-school life science teacher. “Math Options is a away to introduce girls to careers in the physical sciences and engineering before they internalize the cultural message that those subjects are ‘no fun.’”

Math Options Summer Camp meets between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day. Tuition for the week is $125 and includes a daily lunch, snacks, all materials, and camp scrubs; scholarships are available for girls who demonstrate financial need. Transportation to and from the camp is not provided, but scholarship students will receive an EMTA bus pass.
