Alumni brunch features recent grad and NASA intern

Jessica Tramaglini, a 2009 Penn State graduate and former NASA intern, is the special guest speaker at the semi-annual Alumni Brunch from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, June 18, at the printing facility of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review in Warrendale, Pa.

Tramaglini, who earned her bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering in May, served a summer internship at NASA in 2008. During her stay at the NASA Academy at the Goddard Space Center in Maryland, she worked on the mechanical design of a spacecraft that will launch in 2013 to study the earth's precipitation patterns. Only a select few Penn State students have participated in the academy's program. A Pittsburgh native, Tramaglini moves to Texas in July.

The morning social, whose given name is "Penn State A.M.," is an informal one-hour brunch for Penn State alumni and friends who have the opportunity to get "inside the ropes" of the newspaper business. The free brunch, with Happy Valley's famous "grilled stickies" highlighting the menu, kicks-off with a tour of the plant to get a close look at the machinations of printing of the Trib PM. After the afternoon edition is put to bed, guests can enjoy brunch and catch up on the current buzz at Penn State and in the region.

Joining Tramaglini on the dais are two other guests speakers: Amy Caputo, director of strategic communications for the Penn State Alumni Association; and a representative from the Trib.

In addition, the Nittany Lion will make a special appearance, greeting guests and posing for photographs. Co-hosted by Trib Total Media and the Alle-Kiski Society, "Penn State A.M." is geared to alumni who live and work in the greater Pittsburgh area. It is a chance to get together with old friends relive the "glory days" of campus life.

The alumni event began in 2003 at Kennametal Inc. in Latrobe. Since then, Allegheny Ludlum in Brackenridge, Alle-Kiski Medical Center in Natrona Heights, Respironics in Murrysviile, Medrad in Indianola,, Electro-Optics Center in Sarver, Alcoa and Leed's in Upper Burrell, Destination Wellness in Pittsburgh Mills, and the Tribune-Review in Pittsburgh have sponsored the socials. Kennametal has sponsored two, the last being in November 2007. The Tribune-Review is hosting for the second time, the first being last year at its headquarters in Pittsburgh.

The brunches, are not without pecuniary value. The 2007 event garnered the Alle-Kiski Society a $500 award for innovative programming from the PSAA. Before heading off to work, reconnect with former classmates. Alumni who matriculated at University Park can relive their "glory days" when the stickies are served.
