2009 Society of Teachers of Family Medicine President's Award

June 25, 2009

Dr. Shou Ling Leong, professor and associate vice chair for education in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, was the recipient of the 2009 Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) President’s Award. This award was presented to Leong and four other project co-leaders for leading a team of talented educators to create Web-based virtual patient cases for medical student education.

As predoctoral director and clerkship director for family medicine, Leong has been developing and implementing Web-based cases for medical education since 1995. She developed Family Medicine Online, a set of Web-based cases at Penn State College of Medicine, and was among the first to establish the efficacy and acceptance of Web cases. Based on recognition of her leadership in this field, Leong was appointed by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine to lead a national collaborative effort develop a set of 29 Web-based virtual patient cases to teach the family medicine national curriculum.

These cases, known as fmCASES (Family Medicine Computer-assisted Simulations for Educating Students), will help medical schools to meet LCME (Liaison Committee for Medical Education) standards. These standards dictate that all students have comparable educational experiences across all teaching sites, including familiarity with a specific set of learning objectives associated with all major diseases. The fmCASES also model the principles, themes, concepts, and core values that make Family Medicine unique. Many patients from the cases are members of an extended virtual family, so that comprehensive, coordinated, whole-person and family-oriented health care can be illustrated. The fmCASES are developed to foster self-directed and independent study, emphasize clinical problem solving, and teach an evidence-based and generalist approach.

Leong is excited to realize a dream of creating a classroom without walls where students can learn from teachers all across the country no matter where they are enrolled.
