College of IST names student marshal for summer commencement exercises

Valerie Werth will serve as the College of Information Sciences and Technology’s (IST) student marshal for the summer commencement exercises at University Park, to be held Aug. 15 in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Werth, of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., will graduate with a bachelor's degree in information sciences and technology. She will be escorted by faculty marshal Mary Beth Rosson, professor of information sciences and technology.

Werth was surprised and grateful when she found out that she had received the distinction.

“I am extremely honored to be chosen as the student marshal for summer commencement,” she said. “I didn't know that I was being considered so I was surprised when I found out.”

She said the skills that she learned will take her far in the future and that there isn’t a place like Penn State or IST.

“IST has taught me many skills that have prepared me for the future, and I look forward to using both the technical and soft skills that IST has taught me in the future,” she said. “I will certainly miss IST and Penn State when I graduate next month.”

During her time at Penn State, Werth has been involved with Penn State’s IFC/Panhellenic dance marathon (THON), serving as a technology captain. She also was involved in the Women in Information Sciences and Technology Club within the college.

As she pursued her undergraduate degree, Werth held several internship positions, including a corporate internship with Johnson&Johnson and a research position with the Computer Supported Collaboration and Learning Lab in the College of IST.

Werth plans to begin pursuing employment opportunities in the fall and is also considering graduate school.
