Students to serve tea luncheon to benefit American Rescue Workers

Pennsylvania College of Technology students will prepare a tea luncheon on Oct. 19 to benefit the American Rescue Workers Men’s Center in Williamsport.

Under the direction of Chef Judith P. Shimp, associate professor of hospitality management/culinary arts, culinary arts students in the Breakfast and Brunch course will serve an English high tea buffet, with poured hot and flavored ice tea. The tea will be served in Le Jeune Chef Restaurant, which provides an education in fine dining to students in the college’s School of Hospitality, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A silent auction is scheduled during the event, with bidding to end at 1 p.m. The American Rescue Workers is accepting donation of auction items.

Tickets for the tea are $25. Proceeds will benefit the American Rescue Workers Men’s Center in Williamsport, which served 67,797 meals at the 35-bed center in 2008. The organization gave groceries to 8,552 individuals and distributed 1,814 Christmas baskets through its two social-service centers, feeding 4,000 people. In addition, 1,186 children received approximately 9,600 toys.

Purchase tickets or donate items for the silent auction by contacting Kevin Carroll, American Rescue Workers Men’s Center director, at 570-323-8401, ext. 19.

Students helped to develop the menu for the event. Throughout the semester, students in two sections of the Breakfast and Brunch course rotate kitchen responsibilities as they serve the public in the restaurant on Sundays and Mondays.

Students participating in the event are Casandra E. Balch, Abbottstown; Samuel K. Bickle, Centre Hall; Nicole M. Bilinski, Catawissa; Elaine F. Gardner, Spring City; Michael D. Keating, Dallas; Ashley N. King, Williamsport; Adam R. Rudisill, New Oxford; Jason A. Sereno, Johnsonburg; Joshua D. Sherman, Wellsboro; and Todd A. Unger, New Oxford.

The tea luncheon not only supports the Men’s Center, but also offers the opportunity for Breakfast and Brunch students to participate in a practicum on traditional tea service.
