Lady Lions participate in United Way 'Day of Caring'

University Park, Pa. -- The Penn State Lady Lion basketball team participated in the PNC Bank-United Way "Day of Caring" on Thursday, Oct. 1. The squad painted at Our Lady of Victory Preschool on Westerly Parkway in State College. For photos, visit http://live.psu.edu/stilllife/2149 online.

Each year, "Day of Caring" volunteers work on improvement projects for Centre County; these services are available for all qualifying nonprofit organizations, community recreational facilities, historical sites and other relevant areas. The projects consist of activities such as landscaping, painting and repair. Last year's event had more than 600 volunteers, working on more than 260 projects in 110 locations throughout Centre County.

The Lady Lions have been long-time participants in the "Day of Caring," painting houses for multiple organizations and cleaning up Millbrook Marsh Nature Center in the past. Last year, the squad painted rooms at the Centre Furnace Mansion, which serves as the headquarters for the Centre County Historical Society.

The Lady Lions open their season with an exhibition game against Indiana (Pa.) on Sunday, Nov. 8. Penn State fans that attend the Indiana football game can use their football ticket to receive buy one ticket, get one free ticket for the Lady Lions' home opener against NJIT on Sunday, Nov. 15. Lady Lion basketball season tickets are available by calling 1-800-NITTANY or 814-863-1000. Season tickets are $117 for adults, $52 for youth and $91 for seniors.

The 2010 WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, as the Lady Lions take on Illinois in the Bryce Jordan Center. The game can be seen at http://www.bigtennetwork.com online. The first three Pink Zone events have raised more than $80,000 for breast cancer awareness. This year's fundraising efforts will benefit the Mount Nittany Medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
