Penn State thespians to perform Sweeney Todd Oct. 29 to 31

The longest continually student-run club on campus, The Penn State Thespians, are bringing the Tony Award-winning musical "Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" to Schwab Auditorium on Penn State's University Park campus this Halloween weekend. The show will be preformed at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 through 31, with an additional 2 p.m. matinee show on Oct. 31.

Recently made known to millions by the cinematic production staring Johnny Depp, this comedic thriller takes you back to 19th century London where Sweeney Todd seeks revenge on a malicious judge for destroying his life and family. Sweeney’s cutthroat view of the world sends him into a life of revulsion and slaughter, paired with a business relationship with immoral baker Mrs. Lovett who uses the results of his macabre revenge in her recipes to make "the tastiest meat pies in London."

Ticket prices are $8 for Penn State students, $8.50 for children 18 and under, and $12 for adults. On Saturday there will be a Halloween special with all Penn State student tickets priced at only $6 for the matinee and evening shows. In addition, group prices are available prior to the performance. Tickets are available at all Arts Ticket Center locations, including the HUB-Robeson Center ticket desk, The Citizen’s Bank Theater and Eisenhower Auditorium, or by calling 1-800-ARTS-TIX (278-7849).

The multitalented cast of Sweeney Todd will take the audience on a comedic and captivating thrill ride of Stephen Sondheim’s gleefully gruesome musical. Under the direction of Bram McGinnis, Sweeny Todd will leave theatre-goers amused with its utterly outrageous dark humor.
