University Park fall commencement scheduled for Dec. 19

University Park, Pa. – Penn State will confer an anticipated eight associate degrees and 2,386 baccalaureate degrees on Saturday, Dec. 19, at the University Park campus during three fall commencement ceremonies, over which Penn State President Graham B. Spanier will preside. He will also lead the Graduate School commencement for an expected 691 graduate students.

The 9 a.m. commencement ceremony in the Bryce Jordan Center will include graduates in the College of Agricultural Sciences, Smeal College of Business, College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, College of Engineering and the College of Information Sciences and Technology. The ceremony for associate degree recipients, The College of Arts and Architecture, College of Communications, College of Education, College of Health and Human Development, College of Liberal Arts, the School of Nursing and Eberly College of Science will begin at 12:30 p.m., also in the Bryce Jordan Center. The Graduate School Ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. in Eisenhower Auditorium.

Eva J. Pell, senior vice president for Research and dean of the Graduate School, will speak at the Graduate School ceremony. Pell has served in the position since 1999, and previously held a joint appointment in the University's Environmental Resources Research Institute and the Department of Plant Pathology. In August, Pell was appointed Under Secretary for Science for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., which she will assume in January 2010.

At other Penn State campuses, an estimated 285 students will graduate with associate degrees, 881 with baccalaureate degrees and 265 with graduate degrees, for a University-wide total of 4,561 fall graduates. A list of those commencement events is at online.

In addition to the commencement ceremonies, the Schreyers Honors College plans to recognize 43 graduating seniors at a traditional honors medal ceremony at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel.
