Monterey Jazz Festival visits University Park

February 17, 2010

University Park, Pa. -- The Monterey Jazz Festival took the stage in Eisenhower Auditorium on Tuesday, Feb. 16, treating the large audience to a two-set-plus-encore evening that lasted more than two hours.

The tour group featured six prominent musicians: pianist Kenny Barron, violinist Regina Carter, vocalist Kurt Elling, guitarist Russell Malone, bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa and drummer Johnathan Blake. The jazz festival tour is a promotion of the annual Monterey Jazz Festival in Monterey, Calif., which takes place every September and is in its 53rd year.

Each of the musicians has enjoyed success on the jazz studio and tour scenes, the most recent accomplishment coming in the form of a Grammy award given to Elling on Jan. 31, in the category of Best Vocal Jazz Album. Following Tuesday's performance, the sextet will continue up and down the eastern portion of the United States for the remainder of February, with an additional monthlong tour on the West Coast beginning on April 14.
