Annual 5K run/walk to remember Virginia Tech victim set for April 16

March 29, 2010

The fourth annual Jeremy Herbstritt Memorial 5K Run/Walk will take place on April 16, in memory of the Penn State engineering alumnus who died at the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings.

Registration is open to the public at a cost of $18 for adults, and $8 for children age 10 and under. The walk/run begins at 6:30 p.m. near the Intramural Building on Curtin Road on Penn State's University Park campus.

All those who register before April 1 will be guaranteed a commemorative shirt. Teams of five individuals also are welcome. The top male and female finisher and the winning team will receive a trophy. Age-group winners will also receive an award.

Money raised will be donated to the Memorial Fund for Jeremy Herbstritt. Proceeds will support the Herbstritt family's goal of building a community track facility in Jeremy's memory at Bellefonte Area High School, his alma mater. More than 900 runners and walkers took part in the first three years of the event. Proceeds from those first three years exceeded $14,000.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Nittany Valley Running Club teamed up to create an event to honor Herbstritt's memory in May 2007 after he died in the Virginia Tech shootings on April 16, 2007.

"We're pleased to continue this event at Penn State in honor of Jeremy, and it's particularly meaningful that it will take place on the anniversary of the tragic day at Virginia Tech," said Peggy Johnson, head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Herbstritt was a native to Bellefonte and later attended Penn State. He earned his bachelor's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology in 2003 and a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 2006. He was enrolled at Virginia Tech for graduate studies in civil engineering.
