Penn State Harrisburg faculty member Robin Veder will be a visiting scholar-in-residence at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s Research Center for Modernism in Santa Fe, N.M., from May 15 to Aug. 15.
An assistant professor of humanities and art history/visual culture, Veder is one of only six scholars to be awarded the annual scholar-in-residence for projects related to the study of American modernism and to the art and life of O’Keeffe. Other 2010 scholars are from the universities of Colorado, Delaware, Kansas, Miami and New Mexico State.
Veder’s appointment supports research on her book, "The Living Line: Artistic Bodies and Embodied Art, 1890-1930," which is about how posture training, choreographed gestures, and breathing exercises shaped American production and consumption of modernist visual art. The book is under advance contract with the University of Pennsylvania Press.
Over the last two years Veder was awarded a senior fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution’s American Art Museum to research “embodied modernism,” delivered an invited lecture at Princeton University’s Architecture and Urbanism Series, and co-curated an exhibit at University Park’s Palmer Museum of Art titled “Breathing Motions: Figure Studies by Arthur B. Davies.”
A Penn State Harrisburg faculty member since 2004, Veder previously conducted collections research and curated exhibits for the National Park Service’s Historic American Landscape Survey, the Smithsonian Institution’s Horticulture Services Division, James Madison’s Montpelier, the Stonewall Jackson House in Lexington, Va., and the Virginia Historical Society.
The O’Keeffe Museum welcomes more than 2 million visitors each year and is the only museum dedicated to an internationally known female artist. The research center is the only one in the world devoted to American modernism.
