WPSU to hold radio show about natural gas drilling

The recent oil spill resulting from deep-sea drilling in the Gulf Coast has focused the nation’s attention on the environmental consequences of fossil fuel extraction. Meanwhile, here in Pennsylvania, the recent rush to drill in the Marcellus Shale has raised concerns on several environmental fronts, but particularly with respect to how drilling can affect water quality.

Penn State Public Broadcasting will hold a live radio event that will address the environmental issues related to drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale.

The live call-in radio program will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 27 on WPSU-FM.

Panelists for the show include:
* Tom Murphy, Co-director of Penn State's Marcellus Initiative for Outreach and Research
* Bryan Swistock, water resources extension specialist for the College of Agricultural Sciences

“Expert guests will talk about the regulations currently in place related to Marcellus shale drilling, as well as proposed new regulations," said Cynthia Berger, the director of news and public affairs programming for WPSU-FM. "They’ll talk about the different stages in the drilling process and what the various potential impacts on our region’s water resources can be.”

Berger will moderate the discussion. She and members of the panel will take comments and questions via phone at 814-543-8242, e-mail at radiolive@psu.edu, text message at 814-422-3095, and chat at http://wpsu.org/gasrush online.
