Acrylic paintings by Korean artist Jae Bee Ryoo
This summer the HUB Gallery will feature the vibrant acrylic works of South Korean painter Jae Bee Ryoo. The exhibit will run May 25 through July 25. An artist reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 11, outside the HUB Gallery, located on the first floor of the HUB-Robeson Center on Penn State's University Park campus.
Through her own cultural influences and reliance on simplicity and negative space, Ryoo takes the art of traditional still life to a new level. Unlike traditional still life that focuses more on the decay of the subject, her vibrant colors capture the emotions of the people and the beauty of blossoming flowers. The simplicity of her paintings also gives viewers a sense of relaxation and meditative state common in South Korean culture.
Jae Bee Ryoo is a graduate of Youngnam University’s College of Fine Arts in Daegu, South Korea. Her work has been featured is group and solo shows in cities through South Korea and can also be seen this summer at the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts’ McLanahan Gallery at Penn State Altoona.
Images by Chuck Fong: A photographic exploration
The HUB-Robeson Galleries will present the works of Centre County photographer Chuck Fong this summer in an Art Alley exhibit. The exhibit will run from now through Sept. 5. An artist reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 11, outside the HUB Gallery.
For more than 20 years, from drag queens to grange fairs, Fong has captured images of the people and personalities that compose the Centre Region through his lens. For Fong, masters of the field like Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon and Edward Hopper have not only influenced his way of seeing, but also his lifestyle. This exhibit features more than 20 photographs divided into three categories: people in gritty circumstances, architectural studies and female figures. Continuing the search for those locales, which reflects his vision, Fong says, will enhance his goal of sharing his work through future exhibits and a possible book.
Fong is a Penn State alumnus with studies in fine art, architecture and Art History. After an honors filled Penn State career, he honed his skills in New York, then attended the Winona International School of Professional Photography and trained with nationally renowned photographers at workshops and seminars.
