WPSU-TV earns several Emmy nominations

University Park, Pa. -- WPSU, Penn State’s public broadcasting station, has received several Mid-Atlantic Emmy nominations from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. These regional awards recognize local productions for excellence in television programming.

The categories and WPSU nominees are:

  • -- Entertainment Program or Special: “Music from Penn State: Music Theatre Spotlight,” Jeffrey A. Hughes, producer/director
  • -- Individual Achievement (Editor for a program): Cole Cullen
  • -- Documentary: “Out in the Silence,” Qwaves Documentaries with support from Penn State Public Broadcasting

Taped before a live studio audience, “Music from Penn State: Music Theatre Spotlight” showcases the senior class of Penn State's renowned musical theatre degree program. The program is a collaborative effort of WPSU and the College of Arts and Architecture.

Cole Cullen’s entry submission includes video clips from “Dirt Track Memories” and “Heart of the Lion,” two documentaries created by Penn State Public Broadcasting in 2009.

“Out in the Silence” captures the remarkable chain of events that unfold when the announcement of filmmaker Joe Wilson’s wedding to another man ignites a firestorm of controversy in his small Pennsylvania hometown of Oil City, Venango County. Penn State Public Broadcasting supported the program with post-production work and distributed it across the country. Penn State Public Broadcasting also created and maintains the documentary’s web site, http://www.wpsu.org/outinthesilence online.

The Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards, now in their 28th year, recognize excellence in programming and individual achievement in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on Sept. 25 at the Philadelphia Loews Hotel.
