American war correspondents are the focus of professor emeritus' book

On Sept. 13, the University of Illinois press will publish a new book by Mary S. Mander, professor emeritus of communications at Penn State. The book, titled "Pen and Sword: American War Correspondents, 1898-1975," Addresses the ever-changing, overlapping trajectories of war and journalism.

The book is an introduction to the history and culture of modern American war correspondence and considers a wealth of original archival material. In powerful analyses of letters, diaries, journals, television news archives and secondary literature related to the United States' major military conflicts of the 20th century, Mander's book highlights the intricate relationship of the postmodern nation state to the free press and to the public.
