Health Shorts: Sleep apnea risky during surgery

September 08, 2010

Persons with sleep apnea are at risk of serious complications when taking certain medications or when under general anesthesia for surgical procedures. Breathing problems are common in a sedated apnea patient lying on his back.

Diagnosed patients should be sure to report the condition to their physicians. Undiagnosed sleep apnea presents a substantial risk during surgery.
