Conference for academic advisers set for Oct. 27

“Academic Advising: Who, What, Where, When, Why?” is the theme of this year’s professional development conference on academic advising, scheduled to take place Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on the University Park campus.

This annual event is for academic advisers, faculty members who advise and others interested in the field of academic advising. Conference fees and registration information is available at http://www.psu.edu/dus/fallconf.html online.

Keynote speaker James Endres Howell, coordinator of undergraduate advising for Penn State's Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, will present "Preparing for a Career in Academic Advising by Earning a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology." Susan Kolls, Internal Transfer Program Adviser for Northeastern University, Boston, will present "The Adviser Matters" during a lunchtime plenary session.

Numerous concurrent sessions throughout the day will address questions surrounding academic advising as it evolves in the 21st century: Who in fact are today’s practitioners, partners and recipients; what really constitutes effective advising on college campuses; can academic advising flourish in nontraditional settings; are there key times to impart certain advising messages; and is academic advising really an essential component of a college experience?

Sponsoring the 2010 conference are the Division of Undergraduate Studies, Office of Undergraduate Education, University Faculty Senate, Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, and The Mentor: An Academic Advising Journal.
