Visit by VP Biden to alter traffic patterns and daily routines

September 27, 2010

University Park, Pa. -- A mid-day visit Tuesday (Sept. 28) by Vice President Joe Biden to the University Park campus may cause delays in traffic or pedestrian flow at certain times of the day, as well as possible rerouting. In addition, the road leading to the University Park Airport will be closed for a short period and access to the airport will be restricted.

For security reasons before and during Biden's visit to the HUB-Robeson Cultural Center, the following traffic restrictions will be in place on Pollock Road from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (or the conclusion of the event):

-- Access to Pollock Road from Shortlidge Road will be restricted to media and logistical vehicles with prior security approval.

-- All vehicles accessing Old Main, parking lots Brown B (Chandlee/Pond Lab), Brown C (Davey/Whitmore/Osmond/Frear), and Brown G (Henderson) will be required to enter Pollock Road and proceed west from Burrowes Road to reach these parking areas.

The vice president's arrival at the University Park Airport will be a closed event, which means there will be no public access at the airport or along the motorcade route.

-- Fox Hill Road and Fox Hollow Road will be closed for approximately 15 minutes sometime between 1-2 p.m. until the motorcade arrives at the HUB. This route also will be closed for 15 minutes during departure sometime between 3:30-4:30 p.m.

-- Parking along Fox Hollow and Fox Hill roads will be prohibited all day. Pennsylvania State Police will tow any vehicles that stop or park along this route. Commuters should plan to use Bernel Road on Tuesday afternoon instead of Rock Road or Filmore Road.

-- Ticketed airline passengers and people needing to pick up or drop off ticketed passengers will be permitted to enter the Airport Terminal. Cars will not be permitted to be parked or left unattended in front of the terminal. Police and Secret Service ask that people cooperate at all checkpoints.

Pedestrians on campus and drivers in these areas should plan for some slight delays at certain times as the vice president arrives and leaves the facility. Vice President Biden is headlining a rally on campus at Alumni Hall in the HUB, sponsored by the College Democrats. Doors to the event will open at noon, followed by entertainment from the band Velveeta. The program will begin at 1:20 p.m. with talks from various individuals, including members of the College Democrats, a Congressional candidate and Vice President Biden.

The event is free and open to the public, but those with free tickets will be granted priority seating. Free student tickets are available at the HUB Information Desk on Monday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Students must show an ID to obtain a ticket and only one ticket per student ID will be provided. In addition, both student and public tickets are available at the Centre County Democratic Headquarters at 224 S. Allen Street on Monday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Attendees should not bring any bags to the event, however, a bag check will be available in Room 110 HUB. Use of public transportation is encouraged. Airport-like security will be in place at the HUB and no signs or banners are permitted.
