October 22, 2010

A new memorial award has been established at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus in the name of the late Evelyn Girard Mahoney of Connellsville, Pa., who earned bachelor and masters degrees from Penn State. A life member of the Penn State Alumni Association, Mahoney designated the gift to the University in her will. Mahoney’s daughter, Mary Mitchell, also of Connellsville, presented the gift to the Fayette campus.

Undergraduate students attending Penn State Fayette who have achieved academic excellence in science or engineering are eligible to apply for the award, which will be distributed annually to one or more qualifying students as determined by the scholarship selection committee.

Mitchell said her mother always believed in the value of education. “Her education from Penn State University opened many doors and opportunities for her in her lifetime. She wanted this gift to help provide the same opportunity for others,” Mitchell explained.

Penn State Fayette Chancellor Francis Achampong said, “Penn State Fayette students are the beneficiaries of this generous memorial award that will allow us to increase the number of students pursuing science and engineering degrees, which are in high demand, yet short in supply.”
