ITS warns against use of social media sites on open wireless networks

November 03, 2010

Information Technology Services is warning all Penn State students, faculty and staff against connecting to social media websites via open wireless networks (such as those found at hotels, airports and other similar spaces). A new extension for the Firefox Browser, called Firesheep, makes it easy for users to "side-jack" the social media sessions of others on an open network, allowing them to assume others' identities. For more information, visit http://sos.its.psu.edu/2010/10/firesheep.html online. Questions and requests for assistance should be directed to helpdesk@psu.edu.
