Milestone reached in staff job classification program transition

Effective Nov. 1, all University staff jobs are now classified within Penn State’s Competencies Program for job evaluation. The full competencies implementation process included updating information for employees transitioned to the Competencies Program at earlier dates and finalizing the transition of employees currently in the Staff Position Evaluation and Compensation Program (SPEC). In total, more than 9,000 employees have transitioned and are now within one job evaluation system, allowing for more consistent job postings, job evaluations and compensation practices across Penn State.

More than 500 employees from across the University were involved in the development of the new job profiles that are now the basis for the job evaluation system. In addition, new salary bands have been established with jobs matched to those bands based on current market salaries for similar jobs. Both the job profiles and the salary bands are now available through the Office of Human Resources’ Compensation and Classification Web page, at http://ohr.psu.edu/employment-and-compensation online.

Each staff employee has received, or will be receiving, a confirmation letter outlining his/her job information. Additional information concerning the Competencies Program, including “frequently asked questions” documents, is available through area Human Resources Representatives and on the Compensation and Classification Web page.
