Shenango to hold fall commencement ceremony

Penn State Shenango will hold its 2010 fall commencement ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, in the Shenango campus auditorium with a reception immediately following. Fred Leeds, chancellor, will confer baccalaureate and associate degrees on 46 graduating students. 46 graduating students.

The ceremony will open with the academic processional played by pianist Larry Perna followed by the National Anthem sung by Missa Eaton, assistant professor of psychology. Kathy Mastrian, associate professor of nursing and faculty marshal, will then welcome graduates, family members, and guests to the 2010 fall commencement ceremony.

This year, Penn State Shenango welcomes Donald Reed Jr., certified public accountant, Reed & Reed Associates in Hermitage, as its commencement speaker. Reed attended Penn State Shenango and later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, summa cum laude, from Youngstown State University.

Reed has more than 30 years of experience in small business and tax accounting. His firm has grown to become the single largest tax preparation firm between Pittsburgh and Erie serving thousands of clients each year on a national basis.

Reed also has extensive sales and marketing experience. He has served with the Ohio Public Employees Deferred Compensation Program as a marketing representative and is currently an investment adviser representative with Genworth Financial Securities, Inc.

In addition to being a Penn State alumnus, Reed has three grown children who have graduated from Penn State University over the last several years. He and his wife, Karen, reside in Sharon, Pa.

This year’s graduating student address will be given by Debbie Yobe of Sharpsville, Pa. Yobe will be graduating with an associate degree in physical therapy assistant (PTA). She is currently employed at Action Physical Therapy in Hubbard, Ohio, as a licensed PTA. While at the Shenango campus, she was a member of the PTA Club.

Yobe is the daughter of Robert Loomis and the late Bonnie Loomis. She was married to the late Bill Yobe for 29 years. She has two daughters, Sara and Stacy, who are both married, a son Hank, and a granddaughter, Amelia.

Before beginning college, Yobe was the children’s director for the Community Bible Study in Youngstown, Ohio, for 10 years. She also volunteered at the Prince of Peace Center in Farrell, Pa., and at Notre Dame School in Hermitage, Pa., where her children attended grade school.

The commencement ceremony will conclude with the induction of the 2010 Penn State graduates into the Penn State Shenango Alumni Society by Society President Danielle Schmidt.
