The Commission for Adult Learners is seeking nominations for the 2011 Shirley Hendrick Award. The award recognizes an administrator whose visionary accomplishments have contributed significantly to the success of the University's efforts to serve adult learners.
Candidates for the award are champions of the strategic development and delivery of outreach programs. They encourage a culture of academic freedom, innovation and collaboration, and they provide leadership and communicate the importance of outreach, internally and externally.
The award is open to academic administrators University-wide, including deans, associate deans, assistant deans and chancellors. The award includes a stipend of $1,000. The winner will be recognized during the annual Faculty/Staff Awards Luncheon on March 21, 2011.
Penn State Outreach created the award in 2000. The first recipient was Shirley Hendrick (1936–2000), associate dean for continuing education in the Smeal College of Business and the inaugural chair of the Commission for Adult Learners. Hendrick was a tireless advocate for adult learners. The award was renamed in her memory.
The Commission for Adult Learners is now the administrator of the award. The commission, comprised of faculty, staff and students from throughout the University, is dedicated to improving the adult learner experience at Penn State.
