Registration opens for annual Jeremy Herbstritt memorial run/walk

Registration is now open for the fifth annual Jeremy Herbstritt Memorial 5K Run/Walk, which honors the Penn State engineering alumnus who died at the Virginia Tech shootings in 2007.

The race will take place April 20 on Penn State's University Park campus. Registration is $15 for adults before April 1. After that, registration is $20 for adults and $8 for children ages 10 and under. Participants may register online at http://tinyurl.com/ForJeremy2011. Those who register before April 1 are guaranteed a commemorative T-shirt.

The run/walk will begin at 6:30 p.m. near the Intramural Building on Curtin Road. Teams of five individuals are welcome, and the top male and female finishers, as well as the winning team, will receive a trophy. Age-group winners will also receive an award.

Herbstritt was a native of Bellefonte and had a passion for running. He earned a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology in 2003, as well as a second degree in civil engineering in 2006 from Penn State. He was pursuing a graduate degree in civil engineering at Virginia Tech.

Funds raised will benefit the Jeremy Herbstritt Memorial Fund. Proceeds will support the Herbstritt family's goal of building a community track facility at Bellefonte Area High School, Herbstritt's alma mater.

The event was created in May 2007 by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Nittany Valley Running Club.

In the first four years of the event, more than 1,100 runners and walkers participated and proceeds exceeded $16,000.
