Admiral to discuss 'Communicating the Navy'

The principal spokesman for the Department of the Navy will be featured in a free public event about the Navy's communication efforts, the impact of social media and more at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in Foster Auditorium of Paterno Library on the University Park campus.

Rear Adm. Dennis J. Moynihan, chief of information for the Navy, leads the Navy's 2,500-member public affairs community and provides strategic communication counsel to the secretary of the Navy.

His presentation, titled "Communicating the Navy: Social Media, the 24/7 News Cycle and Talent: A Candid Conversation with the Navy's Chief of Information," is sponsored by the Don Davis Program in Ethical Leadership and the Department of Advertising/Public Relations.

Before becoming the Navy’s chief of information, Moynihan served as chief public affairs officer for NATO's Allied Command Transformation and director of public affairs, U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Va., from 2006 to 2009.

From 2003 to 2005, he was special assistant for public affairs on the staff of the chief of naval operations. He served in similar capacities for the chief of naval personnel and commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Moynihan also was the director for the Navy Office of Information in Dallas.

Moynihan served at sea as public affairs officer in USS Enterprise and commander, Enterprise Battle Group from 1996 to 1998. He served his first public affairs assignment in the Office of Information from 1993 to 1996 as aide to the chief of information and as action officer on the Navy news desk.

Moynihan is a 1986 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He received a master’s degree in communication from the University of Oklahoma and a master’s degree in national security strategy from the National War College.
