College of Engineering wins two communications awards

The College of Engineering has won two 2011 CUPPIE Awards from CUPRAP, the Association of Communicators in Education.

The college won a bronze award in the feature story category for the article "'Miracle Tree' May Provide Clean Water to Developing Countries."

The story focused on a work by Darrell Velegol, professor of chemical engineering; Stephanie Velegol, instructor of environmental engineering; and Richard Schuhmann, the Walter L. Robb director of engineering leadership development, on a year-long, $10,000 Environmental Protection Agency P3 grant. The engineers are investigating the use of the moringa oleifera tree to kill bacteria in drinking water.

The original story can be accessed at http://live.psu.edu/story/48249.

The college also won a bronze award in the print publications/cover category for the fall Engineering Penn State alumni magazine.

The cover of the magazine features a photo of a Moroccan woman shot during an annual outreach trip to the North African country led by Schuhmann.

A PDF of the entire magazine can be downloaded at www.engr.psu.edu/NewsEvents/EPS/2010fall.pdf.

The awards were given at CUPRAP's annual spring conference from March 16 to 18 at the Hotel Hershey in Hershey, Pa.

CUPRAP is a voluntary organization of communications professionals working in the higher education field.

Originally founded as the College and University Public Relations Association of Pennsylvania in 1980, CUPRAP has since grown to include more than 100 institutions from New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania.
