Ian Marshall's book, "Walden by Haiku," has won the best "criticism" award in the Haiku Society of America's 2010 Kanterman Book Awards. Marshall is a professor of English and environmental studies at Penn State Altoona. In "Walden by Haiku," Marshall presents a collection of nearly 300 haiku that he extracted from Henry David Thoreau’s Walden and documents the underlying similarities between Thoreau's prose and the art of haiku. The Haiku Society of America is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1968 to promote the writing and appreciation of haiku in English.
