Facebook researcher to speak at IST on April 4

Facebook’s Rong Yan will present a talk titled “Large-Scale Social Media Analysis at Facebook” at the College of Information Sciences and Technology from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Monday, April 4, in room 113 (the Cybertorium) of the IST Building on Penn State's University Park campus.

In this lecture, Yan will discuss a number of Facebook algorithms and applications which mine this massive media streams for different purposes -- for example, identifying popular trends in Facebook, discovering latent topics of Facebook users and detecting user happiness. He will also describe related Facebook applications in the domain of rich media, such as face detection and recognition, and image and video storage.

Yan is a research scientist at Facebook. Previously, he was a research staff member in the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center from 2006 to 2009, and received the IBM Research External Recognition Award in 2007.

Yan received his masters and doctoral degrees from Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science. His research interests include large-scale machine learning, data mining, digital and social media analysis, information retrieval and computer vision.
