School of Visual Arts Alumni Award recipient to give lecture April 7

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Judith Bernstein, recipient of the 2011 College of Arts and Architecture Alumni Award in Visual Arts, will give a free public lecture at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in 121 Borland Building, on the Penn State University Park campus. Bernstein’s lecture is sponsored by the Penn State School of Visual Arts’ John M. Anderson Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series.

Bernstein, who earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree in Art Education in 1963 and 1964, respectively, is a New York-based artist known for her large-scale, often controversial drawings that have been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions across the country. She holds bachelor of fine arts and master of fine arts degrees from Yale University, and was a founding member of AIR (Artists in Residence) Gallery, the first women’s gallery, and the Guerilla Girls, a feminist group that exposes sexism, racism and corruption in politics, the media and pop culture. She was an adjunct professor at the State University of New York (SUNY) Purchase College for more than 30 years and currently is an adjunct associate professor at Queens College, City University of New York (CUNY).
