Earth Day activities at Penn State Greater Allegheny

Penn State Greater Allegheny students will be commemorating Earth Day with a number of activities designed to celebrate the earth and educate staff, students and the greater community about how to make the campus and community a greener place.

Pre-Earth Day activities will kick off with a screening of the documentary "Garbage Dreams" at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, in the Ostermayer Room. "Garbage Dreams" follows three teenage boys born into the trash trade and growing up in the world’s largest garbage village, a ghetto located on the outskirts of Cairo and home to 60,000 Zaballeen, Egypt’s “garbage people.” Community members are welcome to attend.

The Penn State Greater Allegheny Environmental Club and Film Club have teamed up to develop a video about what the campus is doing to become greener.  This will include an update on a biodiesel project that engineering students are working on with Eric Lipsky, assistant professor of engineering to convert vegetable oil to biodiesel fuel.  The video will be shown on April 20 following "Garbage Dreams."

Earth Day activities on April 22, will begin with lights out at 2 p.m. for one hour in the cafeteria area or the Student Community Center (SCC) to demonstrate energy savings. Other activities from 2 to 5 p.m. include a tree planting, game show, scavenger hunt, recycling activity, poetry reading, and performances by the school choir and dance team in the SCC.
