Echocardiography lab receives reaccreditation

April 20, 2011

The Penn State Hershey adult echocardiography lab was recently awarded reaccreditation status by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL) for adult transthoracic, adult transesophageal and adult stress studies. The cardiac structure and flow information provided by these studies is useful in the detection and management of nearly every cardiac disease -- from congenital and valvular heart disease to heart attacks and hypertension. This noninvasive test has become one of the standard diagnostic tools in cardiology, with an estimated 10 million echocardiograms performed annually in the United States.

As part of Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute, the adult echocardiography lab performs more than 13,000 studies per year, with physicians and technical staff who have more than 300 years of combined experience in echocardiography.

First accredited in 2002, the laboratory at Penn State Hershey is one of a growing number of echocardiography laboratories in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico to be recognized for its commitment to high quality patient care and its provision of high quality diagnostic testing.
