Time and Place Photo Essay: Carnegie Building

A look at Carnegie Building yesterday and today is the first in an occasional series of photo essays that will be offered on Penn State Live. Carnegie Building was built in 1904 through funding provided by world-famous industrialist Andrew Carnegie. First known as Carnegie Library, the building was in fact the Penn State library from its dedication through 1940. From 1942 to the early 1960s Carnegie building housed studios and rehearsal spaces for Penn State's music program. Through the years Carnegie Building has been home to Penn State's School of Journalism as well as the Daily Collegian. Following renovations in 1991, Carnegie Building became home for Penn State's College of Communications. The images in the photo essay show Carnegie Building in 1904 prior to completion, compared to how the building looks today.
