Rec Hall has colorful history at Penn State

One of the oldest and most recognized buildings on campus, Recreation Hall was built between 1927 and 1928. It is home to Penn State men’s and women’s gymnastics, national champion men’s and women’s volleyball, men's and women's soccer and men’s wrestling. It also was home of the Penn State basketball program from 1929 to 1996. Rec Hall has hosted more than 20 collegiate national championships.

In 2006, Rec Hall was expanded and renovated to meet the huge demand for student fitness facilities, enhanced varsity athletic provisions and to upgrade wrestling practice spaces. On the west end of campus along Atherton Street, Rec Hall has two gymnasiums, racquetball and squash courts, an indoor track, and a state-of-the art fitness center.

Although known for housing athletics, Rec Hall’s gymnasiums also have been used to hold commencement ceremonies, host the world’s largest student-run philanthropy, THON, for eight years, hold popular musical concerts and has provided an outlet for a number of world-renowned speakers to give inspirational talks to the Penn State community. Rec Hall has been and continues to be a popular stop on political campaign tours.
