University IT pros meet at Penn State Harrisburg for annual conference

More than 150 information technology professionals from 23 Penn State campuses and colleges gathered at Penn State Harrisburg May 19 and 20 for the University's second annual Tech Pro Conference, an idea developed by John D. Hoh, Penn State Harrisburg's campus technology officer, and Dan Mroz, director of information technology at Penn State Mont Alto.

The professional development conference provides an opportunity for IT professionals across the University to network and share best practices. This year’s event saw both an increase in attendance and the doubling of the number of sessions offered, with topics ranging from remote computer labs to protecting confidential information to web space design. Organized by several IT administrators University-wide, the annual tech symposium was first held at Mont Alto in May 2010.

Hoh noted several other successes at this year’s gathering, including a greater level of communication among the campuses. Hoh said he already has received calls offering help for the next symposium.

Participants saw the value in the networking opportunity the event provided. “The conference is a huge benefit for the University,” said Vince Mitchell, instructional services and computer support assistant at Penn State Schuylkill. “It also benefits me to collaborate with others in the University that I don’t normally see. It makes communicating easier than calling and sending emails.”
