Associate dean appointed to landscape architecture acreditation board

Penn State's Gary Kesler, associate dean for undergraduate studies and outreach and associate professor of landscape architecture, has been appointed to a two year term as one of three educators on the nine-person Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board (LAAB). His term began July 1.

The mission of LAAB is to evaluate, advocate for, and advance the quality of education in landscape architectural programs. LAAB develops accreditation standards to objectively evaluate these programs and judges whether the programs are in compliance with these standards. Programs leading to first professional degrees at the bachelor’s or master’s levels in the United States are eligible to apply for accreditation from LAAB.

Kesler came to Penn State in 2008 from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where he was an associate department head and associate professor of landscape architecture. A member of the UIUC faculty since 1980, he served as director of the East St. Louis Action Research Project (2002-03), an interdisciplinary outreach initiative. He has received a number of awards, including the Outstanding Faculty Award for Service from UIUC’s College of Fine and Applied Arts (2003); Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects (1998); and ASLA President’s Medal (2007). Kesler is a registered landscape architect in Ohio and Illinois. He holds a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture from Ohio State University and a master of landscape architecture degree from Harvard University.
