Industrial engineering's Thorsen wins computing fellowship

Andreas Thorsen, a doctoral candidate in the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, recently was awarded an Academic Computing Fellowship by the Penn State Graduate School.

Thorsen will receive a $17,000 stipend plus payment of tuition and fees. In addition, he will receive a $2,000 grant to assist in travel to conferences and other scholastic activities.

Thorsen's research focuses on utilizing algorithm development and optimization software to address optimization under uncertainty in large-scale systems, specifically evacuation transportation planning for highway traffic systems and air traffic management during severe weather.  Collaborators will provide large-scale network data to be used for modeling and HPC systems and PCs will be used.

The fellowship was created in 1987 as an innovative program for doctoral students who have a strong interest in computing applications within their discipline.
