Teamsters local union OKs new agreement

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Members of Teamsters Local Union No. 8 employed by Penn State have ratified a new collective bargaining agreement with the University to replace the current agreement, which expired June 30.

Teamsters Local Union No. 8 represents the bargaining unit consisting of approximately 2,600 technical-service employees at University locations throughout the Commonwealth.

Jon Light, president of Teamsters Local Union No. 8, announced the decision Monday afternoon (Aug. 22) after the count of mail ballots by Union members to accept or reject the offer made by the University.

The new agreement is effective July 1 and covers the three-year period through June 30, 2014. As with other University employees, those covered by this agreement will receive no wage increases this year. The agreement provides for wage increases of 1 percent on July 1, 2012, 1 percent on January 1, 2013, 1.5 percent on July 1, 2013, and 1.5 percent on January 1, 2014.

Other negotiated items of the agreement include healthcare benefits, parking rates and certain modifications in working conditions.

Penn State President Graham Spanier said he is pleased that negotiations have been concluded successfully with the acceptance of the agreement by the union membership.
