Annual Foran Colon Cancer Prevention 5K takes off with 420 runners

The fifth annual Colon Cancer Prevention 5K fielded a record number of participants whose efforts raise money each year for research into the genetics of colon cancer. Some 420 runners, including 30 children participating in the Kids Run, toed the race starting line on June 4 from Harrisburg’s City Island. Nick Berra of Enola captured first place for the adult race in 16:30, and Carlisle’s Addie Audic earned the Kids Race first place in 19:21.

The event is held in honor of William F. Foran, a Palmyra resident and remarkable competitive runner who bravely battled metastatic colon cancer for several years following his diagnosis. During his therapy, he remained active and competed in several running events with his supportive family by his side. The Foran family continues their support for this event.

This year’s race raised approximately $15,000 for the Penn State Colon Cancer Genetics Fund under the direction of Maria Baker. Colon Cancer Race Committee members were Amy Sheranko, Tina Bender, Gaylene Webber, Lisa McCully, Michelle Webber, Walter Koltun, Marjorie Lebo and Baker. Main sponsors of this year’s event were Edward and Jeanne Arnold, The Hotel Hershey, and Penn State Hershey Colon and Rectal Surgery.
