Medical Center named a 'green' health care organization

September 08, 2011

Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center was recently recognized as one of the most 'green' health care organizations in America by the GreenCare Awards program, a one-of-a-kind recognition program that designates excellence in delivering environmentally friendly health care. The Medical Center was selected from more than 125 applicants as the 2011 GreenCare Award Winner in the transportation category, reflecting the organization's commitment to providing environmentally sustainable health care.

Factors that lead to the Medical Center's recognition in the transportation category include:

-- Comprehensive shuttle service across campus for patients, staff and students
-- A shuttle fleet that includes a hybrid bus
-- Preferred parking at some locations, including the East Health Campus, for hybrid or high-efficiency vehicles
-- Maintenance services vehicles that are powered by electric
-- Several miles of bicycle paths on campus that connect to a community bike path system

Hospitals host the responsibility of transportation for staff, patients, and visitors, as well as a considerable amount of goods used by the facility. In most cases, a hospital is the largest employer within the community and can help reduce local auto emissions by encouraging the use of public transportation and car pooling, biking, or walking to work.

The Medical Center and College of Medicine campus also is a designated Capital Area Transit and Lebanon Transit bus stop. To view routes, visit the CAT transit website, http://goo.gl/vv31a or the Lebanon transit website, http://goo.gl/oI3QW.

Sponsored by Strategic Sustainability Consulting, Healthcare insight, and MD News, the GreenCare Awards is America’s leading recognition program for green initiatives in health care.
