Libraries exhibit highlights faculty's favorite books

For the past nine years, the University Libraries and Penn State's Office of the Provost have jointly sponsored an initiative to recognize recently tenured and promoted Penn State faculty members. Through the program, each newly tenured or promoted faculty member is asked to select a book for the University Libraries’ collection that receives a bookplate commemorating the achievement.

Books selected and personal statements about the significance of the books are featured in an exhibit, “Honoring Recently Promoted and Tenured Penn State Faculty,” on display from Sept. 27 to Nov. 7 in the Diversity Studies Room, Room 203 Pattee Library, on the University Park campus.

More about the program and a full list of current and past year’s honorees and submissions can be seen at http://apps.libraries.psu.edu/ptrecog/.

The submissions, as varied as Penn State faculty are a delight to read.

Kathryn Brasier, associate professor of rural sociology selected "Something for Joey," by Richard E. Peck.

She wrote, "This book paints a portrait of a family struggling but surviving -- even thriving at moments -- because they put each other first. The book does not shy away from the sadness, the scary moments, the anger that came with Joey's illness; it also does not shy away from the joy and the celebrations that come with Joey's and John's achievements. The book spoke to me as an adolescent at multiple levels; it continues to do so as an adult with my own family and career. I take from this book lessons about courage in the face of incredible fear and sadness; about survival and resilience; about balance and setting priorities; about success being more than an individual achievement; and about how family bonds withstand pressures and tests over time."
