Academic advising conference to highlight the global community

"Advising for the Global Community" is the theme of this year's professional development conference on academic advising, which takes place Thursday, Oct. 26, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on Penn State's University Park campus. The conference will focus on the value of incorporating global themes in undergraduate studies, teaching students to develop global interests in and out of the classroom, preparing students for learning experiences abroad and understanding the challenges of international exchanges and intercultural communication.

This annual conference is for academic advisers, faculty members who advise or anyone interested in the field of academic advising. Registration fees and details are available online at http://dus.psu.edu/advisers/conf_fall11.html.

Keynote speaker Maren Larson, senior undergraduate studies adviser in the Division of Undergraduate Studies, returned this past summer from a sabbatical year in China. She will offer important lessons learned from her recent travels as well as from earlier experiences abroad and will discuss how advisers might encourage students to grow and develop as citizens of the world. Other presentations throughout the day will address global health studies; service learning, volunteering and internships abroad; motivating students to become global citizens; language studies to promote intercultural awareness; a World Tour event involving students sharing their global experiences; and much more.

Conference sponsors are Penn State’s Division of Undergraduate Studies, Office of Undergraduate Education, University Faculty Senate, the Center for Global Studies, the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, and The Mentor: An Academic Advising Journal.
