Traffic, parking plans announced for homecoming parade

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Traffic and parking plans have been announced for the annual Penn State Homecoming Parade, to take place beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, on the University Park campus and in downtown State College, Pa.

Beginning at 6 p.m. the parade route detailed below will be closed to traffic and parking along the route will be restricted. Motorists must remove vehicles parked on College Avenue prior to the parade. Penn State's Parking Office has identified parking lots that will be affected by the parade and has released a list of lots where parade-goers can park their vehicles.

2011 Homecoming Parade route:

-- Porter Road from Hastings Road to Curtin Road (parade staging area -- closed beginning at 5:30 p.m. until parade clears);

-- Curtin Road to Bigler Road;

-- Bigler Road to Pollock Road;

-- Pollock Road to Shortlidge Road;

-- Shortlidge Road to College Avenue;

-- College Avenue to Burrowes Road;

-- Burrowes Road to Pollock Road.

 

Affected parking lots:

-- Lot Orange M (Intramural Building): Lot Orange M will be closed beginning at 3 p.m. and all vehicles must be moved by 5:30 p.m. This lot will be used as a staging area for parade units.

-- Lot 44 (Bryce Jordan Center): Beginning at 5:30 p.m., traffic will not be allowed to exit onto Porter Road from Lot 44 until parade traffic clears. Motorists will be redirected to the parking lot exit on University Drive.

-- Motorists who do not wish to remain until the conclusion of the parade should plan to move their vehicles from the following areas before 6 p.m.: Orange E (Shields Building -- vehicles only will be allowed to exit to University Drive); Orange D (Wagner Building); Orange J (McCoy Natatorium); Lot 81 (Pollock Building); the HUB-Robeson Center Parking Deck; Yellow J (Atherton Hall); Yellow N (College Avenue in front of Health and Human Development East Building); and Lot Brown A (Behind Reber Building on Burrowes Road).

 

Designated parade parking:

Those attending the parade can park free-of-charge in the following areas from 4 to 9 p.m. (Note: motorists who enter the East, HUB or Nittany parking decks before 4 p.m. or leave after 9 p.m. will be charged $1 per hour for parking):

-- Lot Red A (west of North Atherton Street); Nittany Parking Deck (next to the Nittany Lion Inn); East Parking Deck (near the intersection of Bigler and Curtin roads); Eisenhower Parking Deck (next to Eisenhower Auditorium); the HUB-Robeson Center Parking Deck; and Lot Orange B (at the new softball stadium on Park Avenue). 

Because a concert is taking place at the Bryce Jordan Center on Oct. 14, motorists who park in the following areas will be charged a $10 event parking fee:

-- Lot Stadium West (west of Beaver Stadium); Lot Porter North (north of Medlar Field at Lubrano Park); Lot 44 (east of the Bryce Jordan Center); Lot Orange E (Shields Building); and Lot Orange A (Physical Plant Building).

Parade parking is not permitted in any parking lot designated for resident student parking.
