Presentation to explore nuclear cooperation between Argentina, Brazil

October 31, 2011

Sara Kutchesfahani, a postdoctoral research associate at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, will present "From Nuclear Rivalry to Nuclear Cooperation: The Role of an Epistemic Community in the Creation of Brazilian-Argentine Agency for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials (ABACC)" from 4 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 7, in 112 Katz Building on Penn State's University Park campus.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Kutchesfahani will explore how a group of experts affected the formulation of a nuclear nonproliferation policy in Brazil and Argentina which verified the non-nuclear statuses of the countries. She will analyze the creation and successful implementation of the ABACC and show how an epistemic community, or group of experts, had substantial input in the agreement between the countries to institutionalize the ABACC.

The presentation is sponsored by the School of International Affairs, the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering and the Strategic and Global Security Program.
