UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Eight Penn State students have been selected as College of Agricultural Sciences Alumni Society 2005 Internship Award winners. The award, which includes a $500 stipend, was established to encourage students to enroll in internship courses offered within the College of Agricultural Sciences.
"The Alumni Society recognizes the importance of on-the-job learning experience to prepare undergraduates for today's competitive job market," says Jillian Stevenson, the college's director of alumni relations. "By working as interns, students can establish networks of professional contacts and discover what areas of specialization appeal to them." Internship Award winners are chosen on the basis of an internship plan, a final report on the internship, an employer evaluation and a letter of recommendation from the internship course supervisor. The winners are: --Heather Bonnett, daughter of Lawrence and Susan Bonnett of Coatesville. An Environmental Resource Management major, Bonnett was an intern with the Penn State Small Business Development Center in the Environmental Management Assistant Program (EMAP). She is a graduate of Downingtown High School. --Joel Knoebel, son of Dan and Denise Knoebel of Elysburg. An Animal Science major, Knoebel was an intern with the National Pork Producers Council, a lobbying organization in Washington, D.C., where he reported on hearings with the U.S. pork industry from Capitol Hill. Knoebel is a graduate of Southern Columbia Area High School. --Matthew Lamberski, son of Barbara and Richard Lamberski of Indiana. A Horticulture major, Lamberski was a golf course maintenance intern with the Country Club of Virginia, a private club with three courses in Richmond, Va. He is a graduate of Indiana Area Senior High School. --Alejandro Martinez, son of Alvaro and Marina Martinez of Reading. An Animal Bioscience major, Martinez was an intern with Ecolife Expeditions in South Africa, which offers the Vets-in-the-Wild Expedition, a 22-day program open to veterinary and pre-veterinary students. --Tyler Otero, son of Patricia Otero of Lewistown. Otero is a Turfgrass Science major and completed his internship with the Kauri Cliffs Golf Course in Matauri Bay, New Zealand. Kauri Cliffs is ranked as one of the top 100 golf courses in the world. Otero is a graduate of Lewistown Area High School. --Keith Pollock, son of David and Carolyn Pollock of Marion Center. An Agroecology major, Pollock interned as an agronomy assistant with the Armstrong County office of Penn State Extension in Kittanning. His internship was made possible through an IPM (integrated pest management) grant for monitoring pest and weed emergence. Pollock is a graduate of Marion Center High School. --Aimee Rice, daughter of John Tama Rice of Ashville. Rice, an Animal Bioscience major, completed her internship with Genesis MOET (multiple ovulation and embryo transfer), in Shawano, Wis., a facility that produces top-quality bulls for Genex Cooperative Inc. Rice is a graduate of Cambria Heights High School. --Myken Yearick, daughter of Robert and Holly Yearick of Howard. An Agricultural Sciences major, Yearick interned as a biological science technician with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in Mill Hall. She is a graduate of Bald Eagle Area High School.
