Change in telecommunication policy to boost unit savings this January

Telecommunications and Networking Services (TNS) at Penn State has announced a modification in its policy that will enable customers to move their own voice devices (telephones, fax machines, etc.). With the approval of their unit's IT director and budget administrator, this change will allow departmental IT staff to move telephones and other voice devices that currently are served by a single "telecommunication closet" at the University Park campus.

With minimal training, the departmental IT staff will have the ability to move voice devices and the responsibility of providing location information for each device to TNS for 911 purposes. If departments choose to take advantage of this change, the waiting period necessary for TNS to schedule technicians to perform the this type of move, as well as the cost of doing so, will be eliminated.

Beginning Jan. 2, 2012, TNS is changing its policy as described above. Departmental IT directors will be able to nominate IT staff to execute this process. Once the department’s budget administrator approves the change and the departmental IT staff has received training, the trained IT staff will be authorized to do complete moves themselves.
