Tips for eating right with diabetes

When you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, eating right every day is a necessity. Some tips:

-- Eat a variety of foods – fruits, vegetables, meats, nuts, dairy products and whole grains/cereals.
-- Watch your portions, and eat no more than the calories you need to maintain a healthy weight.
-- Get at least 25 to 35 grams of fiber each day from whole grain breads, cereal and fruit.
-- Eat meals at regular times every day, and don’t skip meals.
-- When eating sweets, be sure to subtract a comparable amount of other carbohydrates such as potatoes or rice.
-- Check your blood sugar after eating concentrated sweets and adjust your insulin dose if necessary.
