UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- With winter break just around the corner, studying for finals, finishing papers and projects and packing to leave campus are on most students’ minds. During this busy time of year, students are encouraged to practice the following steps for personal safety, security of their belongings and energy conservation.
While studying, students need to remember to not leave valuable items such as purses, wallets, backpacks, personal electronic devices or money unattended on tables, in break areas, libraries, study rooms, offices and other public areas.
* Use the buddy system. Don’t walk alone between dusk and dawn, and utilize the Auxiliary Police-run Security Escort Service at (814) 865-WALK.
* Park in well-lit areas if you will be going to or from your vehicle when it is dark.
* Always be alert and aware of your surroundings when returning to your vehicle.
* Remember that your vehicle can be burglarized. If you must keep valuables in your vehicle, lock them out of sight in the trunk.
*Always report suspicious activity or persons to University Police at (814) 863-1111.
While away during winter break, students should secure all their belongings in locked bedrooms or apartments. All valuables that can be easily transported -- laptops, iPods, game consoles -- should go home. Semester and holiday breaks are a time when police see an increase in burglaries in buildings at University Park.
In addition to being safe, students are encouraged to help Penn State in its efforts to conserve resources. The Office of Physical Plant reminds all students to observe the following guidelines as they close up their areas for the holiday break:
*Unplug or shut off all electronics when not in use.
*Make sure windows are closed.
*Draw curtains or close blinds to help retain building heat.
