Faculty member produces 'Football Pictorial'

A Penn State alumnus and faculty member has published a hard-bound, coffee table book with images from every football season since the Nittany Lions joined the Big Ten Conference in 1993.

"A Penn State Football Pictorial" features the work of Steve Manuel from 1993 to 2010. Manuel, an award-winning photojournalist, has been the longtime photographer for "The Football Letter," which has been produced by the Penn State Alumni Association since 1938.

Alumnus John Black, a 1962 Penn State graduate and editor of "The Football Letter," provided the narrative for the 160-page book.

Manuel -- who earned his both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Penn State, in 1984 and 1992, respectively -- is a former public affairs officer for the Office of the Secretary of Defense and Marine Corps spokesman.

His primary duty, when not responding to media queries, was writing public affairs guidance for field commands of all the military services for response to any questions from the press on exercises, operations and specific events. He served in many locations throughout the world, including Hawaii, Vietnam, Pennsylvania, Virginia and New York.

As a photojournalist, he has won numerous photographic and writing awards. He teaches photojournalism and public relations methods and problems in the College of Communications.
