February 09, 2012

Penn State Behrend head baseball coach Paul Benim is among the NCAA Division III’s winningest coaches, according to statistics recently released by the intercollegiate athletic organization.

After 19 seasons coaching men’s baseball, and before that women’s softball, Benim, a 1992 graduate of the college, has accumulated 412 victories, making him the 46th most-winning active coach at the Division III level. His 63-percent win average puts him in 43rd place for that category.

Since taking the helm for baseball in 1996, Benim has won four Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships, including the AMCC’s only ‘three-peat.'  He also guided the Lions to back-to-back Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships in 2002 and 2003.

In 2010, Benim led Penn State Behrend to the college’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victories. The Lions defeated No. 3 Wooster and Thomas More before falling to Heidelberg and Marietta.

Penn State Behrend baseball opens its 2012 season on Sunday, March 4, with a doubleheader against Ursinus College to be played in Fort Pierce, Fla.
