Falke, Penn State Bookstore earn Pink Zone Champion Award

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Third Annual Penn State Lady Lion Basketball Pink Zone Champion Award will be given to Steve Falke and the Penn State Bookstore for their generosity in supporting the WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State. The Penn State Bookstore has been a key sponsor of the Pink Zone at Penn State for all six years, as the exclusive outlet for the official Pink Zone T-shirts.

The Penn State women's basketball team gives out the Lady Lion Basketball Pink Zone Champion Award at each year's Pink Zone game. This award recognizes those who help champion our cause in finding the cure for breast cancer. The individuals or groups will be chosen to be honored because they have made significant contributions in the area of breast cancer awareness, prevention, education, treatment, research or care.

Falke and the Penn State Bookstore have donated more than $59,000 in the five-year history of Pink Zone at Penn State through t-shirt sales and other donations and are hoping for another big number again after this year's sales are tallied. Falke was also instrumental in making the arrangements for Penn State students to design the shirts working with Professor Larry Sommese's graphic arts classes. This year's shirt is available at all Penn State Bookstore locations. Adult t-shirts are $15 with $5 going to the Pink Zone fundraising efforts, while the youth shirt is $10 with $3 going to the cause.

The Inaugural Lady Lion Basketball Pink Zone Champion Award winner was the Centre County Breast Cancer Coalition (CCBCC). The CCBCC is a grassroots effort to provide breast cancer screenings to women living in Centre County who are uninsured or underinsured. Last year, Fullington Trailways won the award coordinating 11 buses from 12 cities across Pennsylvania to bring survivors and their families to the 2011 Pink Zone game.

The 2012 WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State will take place on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. as the Lady Lions take on Minnesota in the Bryce Jordan Center. Last year, the Lady Lions donated nearly $200,000 for breast cancer causes. This year's fundraising efforts will benefit the Mount Nittany Medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital and Lewistown Hospital. For more information on the Pink Zone at Penn State, visit the official Pink Zone website at www.gopsusports.com/pinkzone. The WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State is also on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pinkzoneatpennstate.

Penn State closes out the regular-season with the Pink Zone game versus Minnesota on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and $3 from every single-game ticket sold will be donated to the Pink Zone fundraising efforts. There will be a jersey auction post-game for the Lady Lions' game-worn Pink Zone jerseys. Single game tickets and PNC Flex Books are available by calling 800-NITTANY. PNC Flex Books are $99 and give fans 12 vouchers, including one for the Coaches vs. Cancer game and one for the Pink Zone game, which can be redeemed for Nittany Lion and Lady Lion Basketball tickets in any combination.
